In 2002 the "Hammerclub" was founded in Hamburg. It is meant as a Community of interests. What makes it so special is the fact that it is a platform not only for silversmiths but also for collectors, experts from various museums and the specialised public.
So far the meetings took place in Hamburg, Berlin, Kolding/Denmark, Nuremberg, in the moated castle Klaffenbach near Chemnitz, in s'Hertogenbosch/Netherlands, Würzburg/Germany, Copenhagn/Denmark and in 2011 in Antwerp/Belgium.
The "Hammerclub" wants to give the public an understanding of the work of silversmiths, and it intends to establish and promote the exchange between silversmiths, collectors and experts from various museums. The lively exchange among these three groups and the increasing interest by silversmiths from other countries in this meeting do justice to the Hammerclub's objectives. It shows that good handicraft skills and good design have to go hand in hand so that this trade can survive.
The knowledge of old techniques and professional restoration are as important as the interchange in the fields of visual art and design.
As it happens, in the course of each meeting a silversmith has agreed to undertake the organization of the next meeting the following year, preferably in co-operation with a museum in their home town. This shows that the members of this interest group are strong enough to organize themselves, even without establishing a professional association.
With this in mind, we hope and wish that again and again colleagues from our midst agree to organizing further meetings.
We warmly thank all previous, present and future organizers!
